Study Options Mini Briefs
Task 1 - Analyse Environmental Portraiture
Photographer - Mark Taylor @ AOP
John the Carpenter by Mark Taylor
Analysis - what does the image tell me?
Firstly the image appears to be in an industrial or workshop setting. If you look at the background you can see things such as dust masks, pain cans and bottles of white spirit. If you look at what the man is wearing it's a protective apron or overalls, and he appears to be holding a power tool of some sort.
Now officially this man is a carpenter, as disclosed by the photographer himself. His name is John too, judging by what info the photographer offers.
How was the image shot?
The picture appears to have been shot at a wide aperture judging by the shallow depth of field and the focus on the subject moreso than the environment.
How was it processed?
The photo has definitely had a lot of work done to it in post. Most noticeably is the vignette effect as you can see, looking at the neutral white painted wall, you can see a clear change in lightness compared to the center and the edges.
Task 2 - Plan the Shoots (Mind Maps, Mood Boards, Inspiration)
Still Life Shoot Planning
Here's the mindmap for my still life shoot. There are a few ideas I want to try out, but the primary shot will be of a camping stool on a brown backdrop, with the landing mat unfurled - tackle, bait, lures and lines will be sat on the mat. Hats and magazines will be on the stool (as if a fisherman had left his gear out) and rods, whips will be neatly laid out on either side of the landing mat to showcase all the gear and equipment that goes into a typical day of game fishing, on the lake.
